The Hum of my Sewing Machine and Finding Threads of Joy

As a homeschooling mom of two kids ages 10 & 12, two young adult kids still living at home, and the proud (and often exhausted) owner of two 1-year-old Doberman puppies, my days are a whirlwind of lesson plans, multiplication drills, puppy zoomies, and—whenever I can steal a moment—the hum of my sewing machine. Sewing isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s my creative lifeline. The act of turning fabric into beautifully constructed garments brings a lightness and sense of accomplishment that balances the repetitive rhythm of homeschooling. But, let’s be honest: carving out time to sew while managing a full house is not easy.

The Daily Juggle

Mornings start early with Bible reading and prayer. Giving my day over to God ensures that I am not doing things out of my own will, but of His. A daily reminder of His strength and provision keeps me focused on what matters. He gave his life for me and my top priority is to live my life for Him. That includes being a good steward of my time, talent, and money.

From there, attention turns to the dogs. Dobermans are intelligent, driven dogs, and at the puppy stage, they’re bundles of boundless energy and curiosity. Daily training sessions—practicing recalls, crate training, and basic obedience—are non-negotiable. Skip a day, and chaos reigns. Add in two kids who need breakfast, focused school time, and the inevitable questions about double digit multiplication or geography, and my sewing machine often sits quietly in the corner, waiting for its turn.

Afternoons bring chores, outside errands, playtime for the kids, and more puppy playtime (because tired puppies are good puppies). By evening, when everyone is finally winding down, I’m often too drained to even focus on threading a needle.

Creating Space with Intention: Block Scheduling to the Rescue

After feeling like sewing only happened in frantic late-night bursts or on rare “perfect” days, I’ve learned that structure is my friend. One of the most helpful tools has been a flexible block schedule that protects time for the things that matter most—including my creative pursuits.

Here’s how a typical weekday could look in our home:

6:30–7:30 AM

Bible study and prayer: Sometimes this is a quick devotional on the Bible App, other times it’s a deep dive into a specific topic. Giving my day over to God and praying for people in my life also happens early in the morning. Also, this is when my husband heads to work before the day starts to unroll.

7:30–8:30 AM

Dogs and family start
Dogs get playtime and breakfast. Kids make it to the table for breakfast and reading.

8:30–12:00 PM

Core Homeschool Block
Focused academic time. Math, language arts, history, science. This is essential—no interruptions except puppy potty breaks.

12:00–1:00 PM

Lunch & Outdoor Time
Kids and dogs get fresh air.

1:00–3:00 PM

Flexible Afternoon Academics and Errands
Lighter school subjects and teaching dogs to stay out of the kitchen! The kids are old enough now to work semi-independently on some assignments, which frees me up for afternoon chores and any dinner prep that needs to happen. We usually take this time to run any in-town errands as well.

3:00–5:00 PM

Creative & Free Time Block (My Sewing Window!)
This is the golden hour. The kids do their chores to earn screen time or video games. In addition, the puppies are usually crated for a nap after their afternoon romp giving me time to throw in more laundry and head to my sewing room. Even if I only manage to cut out a pattern or sew a few seams, any time spent with the hum of my sewing machine feels like a victory. Still, that small pocket of creative time recharges me for dinnertime and bedtime routines.

This schedule is not set in stone, but having some sort of outline helps in a big way to manage my time and limit any “time sucks” like doom scrolling or rabbit-hole internet searches.

The Joy That Makes It Worthwhile

There’s something so rewarding about stepping away from the hum of my sewing machine with a finished garment in hand. In addition, the kids love seeing Mom create tangible, beautiful things—it sparks their own creativity. Sometimes they’ll sit nearby asking questions about the process or giving suggestions on design details.

Sewing breaks up the monotony of homeschool routines. While grammar drills and math facts are essential, the act of constructing something with my hands brings variety and joy into our days. It models for my children that creativity has a place even in a busy life, and that pursuing passions matters.

The Doberman puppies, although they are a lot of work, add an undeniable spark. Their enthusiasm is contagious. Watching them learn and grow parallels teaching my kids—it’s exhausting, yes, but incredibly rewarding.

Balancing certainly isn’t about perfection. Some weeks the sewing time shrinks to 30-minute bursts, but occasionally, I get full afternoons. Overall, the key has been protecting small, consistent blocks of time and giving myself grace on the chaotic days. If you’re in a similar season—juggling kids, pets, schooling, and a creative passion—try carving out one protected block just for you. It doesn’t have to be hours. Even a little thread of time devoted to what lights you up can weave joy through the entire fabric of your days. Looking for more snippets of my days? Follow me on Instagram!
